HERE'S 7 SECURITY TIPS TO KEEP THE HOLIDAYS HAPPY

1. KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR STRANGERS

  • Are there any strangers lurking around the block? Let your neighbours know if there is unusual activity. This is especially important during winter vacations.
  • Any moving vans or contractors parked on your neighbours driveway?
  • Join Facebook groups such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Associations; share information!

2. USE COMMON SENSE

  • If you lose a key, then get the locks changed. A better alternative is to eliminate keys altogether by installing an Alarm.com smart lock with built in keypad.
  • Ask all strangers for identification. The person who is “lost” and looking for directions could actually be a burglar checking to see if someone is home.
  • Never hide an extra key outdoor - especially underneath a mat or on top of a light fixture. This is the first place the bad guys look. Leave an extra house key with a friend or a neighbor. Again, a better alternative is to eliminate keys altogether by installing an Alarm.com smart lock with built in keypad.
  • DO NOT advertise on Facebook or Instagram that you are on vacation. You may think you’re letting your friends and family know you’re having a great time, but people often forget to change their privacy settings. If you like to post photos - post them after you get back.
  • For insurance purposes take photos of the contents of your home and keep all receipts in an off-site location. Great options are Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive and Dropbox.
  • Write down the model and serial number of all electronics. This will come in handy for a future Police report and insurance claim.

3. MAKE IT DIFFICULT

  • Reduce Package Theft by having all shipments delivered to your work (if your employer will allow it). Some delivery companies can hold for pickup.
    Best Option:
    Shop Local!
We sponsor your kids sports teams and donate to local charities.
  • Door chains are easy to bypass. Install deadbolts. We have Alarm.com smart lock options with built in deadbolts.
  • Install window bars on all basement windows. They are a great visual deterrent and can be connected to a monitored home security system.
  • Install a stopper or stick on all sliding doors and windows. You can find these at your local hardware store such as Home Hardware, Canadian Tire or Rona.
  • Make sure all doors and windows are locked. Many burglars go door to door looking for targets that forgot to lock their front doors.
  • For cabins, consider installing roller window and door shutters. Visit kimbel.ca to see samples.

4. MAKE IT LOOK LIKE YOU ARE AT HOME

  • Burglars target unoccupied homes so keep your home well lit at night. Install timers that turn lights, radios and televisions on at different times. This gives the appearance that someone is home. A better option is to install Alarm.com smart lights and smart appliance modules and setup on an alternating schedules.
  • Cancel the newspaper and have a friend or neighbour pick-up your mail.
  • Park a vehicle in the drive-way. Don’t forget to lock the doors and remove any valuables.
  • Hire a service or student to shovel the snow off your driveway.

5. INSTALL A MONITORED HOME OR CABIN SECURITY SYSTEM

  • The insurance companies agree. You are 400% less likely to have a break-in and can qualify for an insurance discount of up to 25%.
  • NEW! $0 Equipment, $0 Installation Plans
  • No Phone Line required
  • 24/7 Monitored Protection from intrusion, fire, flood, low temperature, and carbon monoxide
  • Includes Police / RCMP and Fire Department dispatch and Call List notification
  • Optional ALARM.COM - control your smart lights, smart locks, and smart thermostat with *free apps
  • Optional ReedHD™ Wi-Fi Doorbell - Know Who's at the front door, record audio and video onto the cloud
  • A monthly subscription is required for all service plans

6. IN CASE YOU DO HAVE A BREAK-IN

  • If it looks like a door or window was forced open, DO NOT go inside. The Burglar may still be on site.
  • Call the Police from your mobile phone and wait.

7. ALWAYS GET 3 QUOTES

  • Be sure to search Google for reviews and ask friends and family who they use for home security.

DOES MY ALARM SYSTEM NEED A PHONE LINE? MAYBE!

One of the biggest trends in the security industry is that homeowners are cancelling their home phone lines in record numbers. Due to the popularity of smartphones and affordability of high speed internet, 50% of homes no longer have a land line.

Most traditional alarm systems DO require a phone line to transmit signals to a 24/7 Monitoring Station – no matter who your security provider is.

Newer security systems that have been installed within the last 5-7 years often have built in cellular modems. However, cellular providers have been phasing out older 2G and 3G connections and you still may not be properly protected.

If you’re uncertain about your coverage or have recently cancelled your home phone line, your should contact your security provider immediately to confirm your coverage. Reed Security has a $0 DOWN 4G LTE PROMO in place for clients wishing to cancel their home or business land line.

What Are My Options If I Do Not Have Phone Line?

1. Local System

The alarm system is no longer monitored. Your emergency contacts, the Police and the Fire Department are no longer dispatched. You no longer qualify for a home insurance discount (max. 25% per year).

2. I.P. Signalling

An I.P. communicator is added to your alarm system and signals are transmitted to a 24/7 Monitoring Station via high speed internet connection.

3. Cellular Signalling

A cellular communicator is added to your alarm system and signals are transmitted to a 24/7 Monitoring Station via SaskTel, Telus, Bell and Rogers cellular towers.

This is by far the most popular option due to the speed, reliability, increased security and affordability.

In fact, 90 percent of Reed Security’s new subscribers have Alarm.com 4G LTE communication. This dedicated connection works if the phone line is cut, power is out or internet is down.

Once you’re on the Alarm.com platform you have access to one single app that can:

  • Arm/disarm your security system remotely
  • Receive instant arming/disarming alerts
  • Manage users and control what they can do
  • Control smart thermostats, lights, door locks and garage doors
  • View ReedHD™ indoor, outdoor and doorbell cameras

SMART BUSINESS SECURITY VS. TRADITIONAL SECURITY

Here are five ways Reed Smart Business Security, powered by Alarm.com, out-secures a traditional security system every time.

1: You're always protected - even if you forget.

Old security systems have a habit of leaving you unprotected. Forget to turn them on and they can't even sound the alarm during a break-in.

Reed Smart Business Security is different. Just specify a closing time, and Alarm.com takes care of the rest. You can have our auto-arming feature turn the alarm on for you every day, without fail. You can have your system arm itself automatically after a period of no activity. You can also use your Alarm.com app to arm and disarm your system from anywhere.

Even when your alarm is turned off, however, your Alarm.com technology remains on. Reed Smart Business Security works around the clock to protect you, monitoring activity, alerting you to important events, and going the extra mile to keep everyone and everything safe.

2: Our business security technology is built tougher.

As well as being smart, an Alarm.com-powered Reed Smart Business Security system is tough. Our dedicated cellular connection, which delivers the emergency signal to our 24/7 Monitoring Stations, can't be cut like a phone line or broadband cable. If the power goes out, your alarm panel's battery backup keeps you connected.

Our patented Crash and Smash technology, is engineered to defeat an intruder who attacks your security panel to stop it signaling for help.

Your system activates the feature in response to the initial "crash" of the break-in. If your security panel then goes offline, due to the "smash" of a hammer, Alarm.com's cloud platform takes over, alerting our 24/7 Monitoring Stations on the broken security panel's behalf. The intruder will be none the wiser… until the Police arrive.

3: Smart access control means fewer weak spots.

If you're still using keys for security, your business needs an urgent upgrade. Keys are easy to lose, misuse, copy or steal. The more you have in circulation, the weaker your security.

Reed Smarter Access Control replaces keys with smart access control: a secure solution of smart locks, card readers and user codes that puts you in control of who goes where, when.

You can quickly set up or delete access for employees, get access-triggered alerts when certain doors are opened, and quickly find video clips of access events. You can also lock and unlock any door remotely, and even have your business lock itself automatically at closing time.

4: Smart video monitoring helps you manage emergencies

With ReedHD smart security cameras in your Alarm.com-powered system, a nighttime alarm doesn't necessarily mean an immediate dash to work. Instead, you can open a live video feed to see what's going on. If it's a false alarm, you can let our 24/7 Monitoring Stations know. If the emergency is real, it can be verified faster, and Police alerted sooner.

Smart video monitoring also adds huge value in the aftermath of a break-in or fire. It gives you securely-stored footage of the event to share with police and your insurer. Your video clips, easily accessed and shared via your Alarm.com app, could be the key to identifying and catching the culprit, as well as helping your insurance claim proceed.

5: With Alarm.com on your phone, security is at your fingertips

With its own smart business security app, Alarm.com makes it easy to solve security worries and other challenges. Here's what Alarm.com for Business user Jill says about it:

TOP 5 WAYS TO MANAGE MULTIPLE BUSINESS LOCATIONS WITH ALARM.COM

As your business grows, so does the work it takes to manage it - especially when you scale up to multiple business locations.

The complexities of adding new stores, restaurants, warehouses or other premises can create an overwhelming workload (or worry-load) that you'll need to solve. This could mean a new hire, or a new technology solution to help you scale more efficiently.

Alarm.com for Business, with its award-winning multi-location management features, should be at the top of your list. It reduces complexity by giving you and your team a single point of control for essential functions including security, employee access, video monitoring, and energy management for every location in your business.

Whether you're managing two locations or two hundred, using Alarm.com for Business to take care of them will save you time, money and worries.  Here are five big benefits you'll discover.

1: Automatic security lets you "set and forget" at scale

Protecting your people and property is a complex task that Alarm.com makes easy. Our automated security safeguards, which include automatic system arming and door locking at closing time, only need to be set up once. Once Reed Security adds Alarm.com technology to your latest location, it takes just seconds to automate its security by applying the rules you've set up for the rest of your business.

This doesn't just apply to the alarm systems across your business. You can quickly create cross-location rules to regulate employee access, get activity-triggered smartphone alerts, or save energy by automating your Alarm.com smart thermostats

2: Access control with user codes improves and streamlines your security

Outdated access technology weakens your security and gets harder to manage as your business grows. Our smart access technology does the opposite, protecting your business with centrally controlled smart locks, easily managed user codes, and the option of a full keycard-and-reader solution. A single login is all you need to control employee access anywhere your business.

Alarm.com user codes are easy to set up, revoke, and manage in bulk.  You can assign employees to customized access groups, with pre-set permissions determining which location(s) they can access and when—enabling you to streamline and scale your access control to tens or hundreds of employees.

3: Smart business alerts keep you on top of any emerging issues

Unlike traditional security technology, Alarm.com for Business is proactive, alerting you to problematic or unexpected activity at any business location, even when disarmed. The more locations you're taking care of, the more valuable this becomes.

For example, you can set up a single "late opening" alert, then apply it to every location—eliminating the need to check this important detail for every location, every day. You can know right away if a door is propped open, if an off-limits area is accessed, or even if a thermostat is tampered with. You can also set up highly customized video alerts to capture specific activity—take a look:

4: Multi-location video gives you a real-time view of everything

The bigger your business gets, the more important it becomes to see what's going on. Alarm.com gives you a single video monitoring dashboard that combines security camera feeds from different locations, side by side, making it easy for you and your team to stay on top of things.

With four video streams on a single screen, and the ability to set up and toggle between custom, multi-location video groups (e.g. "front door cameras", or "kitchen cameras") it's simple to monitor activity across your business in real time.

5: Customizable permissions let you delegate with clear boundaries

The bigger your team, the more you'll benefit from Alarm.com, especially when you delegate its different functions to managers, or to specialists like a loss prevention officer. With multiple levels of user permissions, Alarm.com makes it easy to give team members access to the features they need, and no more.

You can give a manager the ability to set up or revoke an employee's access, but only at that manager's location. You can give your loss prevention specialist access to every security camera feed without giving them control of your smart thermostats. As the primary account holder, you'll always retain the ultimate ability to increase, decrease, customize or remove your team's permissions.
